Ever since I started teaching kids in outdoor settings, I became fascinated with finding fun ways to connect kids to nature’s rhythms.
I realized that if I wanted to really engage them that we needed to DO something on the big shifts of the moon (or shifts in the day, week, or season). We started with something super simple and fun! Me and the kids are now more aware of what the moon is up to. Through out the week I have kids asking me, "Is it the new moon yet?" or "Is the full moon today?" (I have a cool app on my phone that shows a picture of the current moon phase that I can check quickly if I have forgotten.)
On new moon days, (the day we have program that is closest to the new moon) I bring a special snack to share with all the kids. They know that we get to have special snack because the moon is new and they are happy about it. Simple as that. The new moon has a more inward energy and relates to nourishment and rest, so special snack makes sense to me.
On full moon days, we play at the playground! The full moon has a more expansive and active energy, so a playground day feels right.
You could do whatever feels good to you! The possibilities are endless! I am thinking of adding an art activity to our little ritual. But, I think the key to implementation is keeping it SIMPLE.
Happy new moon!
